Waterside Cottage | From dilapidated outbuilding to annex
Waterside Cottage | From dilapidated outbuilding to annex
Working with Winchester’s conservation requirements to give an existing building a new purpose.
The owner of Waterside Cottage, a Grade II listed cottage, initially wanted to demolish a dilapidated outbuilding within the cottage’s curtilage. The building had become severely run down and was approaching collapse.
However, the conservation officer was reluctant to support its demolition because of its historic relationship with the listed cottage. Rather than pursue demolition, SOLV prepared a planning statement and engaged with the conservation officer at Winchester to explore an alternative approach.
Through constructive discussions, a way forward was established to retain the building’s traditional external character while adapting it to provide an annex. This involved incorporating traditional doors and windows and preserving its appearance, alongside extensive rebuilding works needed to bring the structure back into use.
The result is a new annex that respects the setting of the listed cottage while giving the building a useful future. The client is now pleased that the original outbuilding was retained, creating valuable additional accommodation for future generations.
